It was close to 10 pm on a Saturday and even though we were guaranteed a rainless day, it had not stopped raining! Paul and I were resting there talking about the rugby results, ready for the next fuel drain for the day to come in. Eventually we received the phone call from a lovely woman on a business excursion who had gone to the Tesco filling garage in Battle and put petrol in her diesel blue Peugeot 309 rental. She was fairly irritated by the sounds of it, saying "I still can't believe I've wrecked the vehicle! I'm just so used to filling my petrol car that I had did not remember I was running a diesel!" I told her to relax and not to worry, also that things like this unfortunately often happen. She was able to move the vehicle to a protected space and, as it was only a short distance off from our van, we could arrive at the customer right away. The wrong fuel was cleaned up and removed and she was able to go home to the hotel she was living in. Although we got fairly wet, it was all worth the effort to see her drive away calm and not so apprehensive. One more fuel drain in East Sussex done well in my opinion!

Run Out of Fuel Service

Out of fuel in Battle (out of gas - as the Americans might say)? We operate a full East Sussex Run Out of Fuel Service. We can get out to re-fill your car in the event that you are stuck on a motorway, on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, or just at your home. Our specialists can attend with 10-20 litres of the correct fuel (purchased at cost) and fill up your car. They are also able to fix the typical troubles that might accompany running out of fuel - like airlocks, vehicle failing to restart, or maybe flat batteries caused by over-cranking.

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, regardless of whether it is unleaded or diesel, is usually a significant matter to take care of in an automobile - particularly in modern day common-rail engines.

Having water or AdBlue in the fuel tank can easily contribute to idling problems, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if not addressed correctly, possibly blown injectors. Having water in petrol is a lot easier to remove when compared with water in diesel - this is mainly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Even so we can handle both circumstances rather expediently.

You should know that as long as the vehicle was run with the water contaminated fuel it will quite possible require a new fuel filter fitted since the old one will probably be completely water-logged and unusable.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
